Junior Tutorial
Junior tutorials build on the general foundation developed in sophomore tutorial and allow students to focus their field of study according to their primary country of interest and the particular topics they wish to pursue. Juniors take EAS 98 in the fall or a replacement course approved by the Head Tutor, and EAS 98 in the spring (Junior Writing Seminar) is an optional course for students preparing to write their senior thesis. If a student is opting out of taking the Junior Writing Workshop they must take an additional area course. East Asian Studies will offer two sections of EAS 98 in the fall of 2007-2008. Professor Susan Pharr will teach a Japan Social Science Tutorial, and Professor Elizabeth Perry will teach a China Social Science Tutorial. For more information, please contact the Tutorial Office.
Students will take the fall junior tutorial or a replacement course that the student will choose and the Head Tutor will approve. The spring junior tutorial (EAS 98) will serve as a Junior Paper Writing Workshop and will require a significant research paper in conjunction with EAS 98 or an approved area course of the student's choice that will allow students considering a senior honors thesis to explore a possible topic in some depth. For those who do not write a thesis, the junior paper will serve as the capstone of the concentration, providing an opportunity to explore a subject of one's own choosing in some depth.
